NFL confirms quarterback sneak, aka ‘Tush Push’, remains legal amid Eagles’ success

Well, looks like the NFL still isn’t convinced that the controversial “Tush Push” is causing any harm, therefore it stays! There have been a lot of debates on whether the quarterback sneak play should be banned or not, especially given the Philadelphia Eagles’ success. And at last, the debate is over. 

Last Thursday, NFL Executive V.P. of Football Operations Troy Vincent confirmed that he hasn’t received any proposal from any of the 32 teams in the NFL, requesting to ban the quarterback sneak play, which the Eagles use the most strategically. There is also no intuition that any discussion related to it would be on the upcoming meeting’s agenda for the NFL owner. 

Though it existed for quite some time, it was the Eagles who popularized it in 2022, referring to it as “Brotherly Shove.” The Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts receives a push from his teammates to great effect, mainly in situations with short-yardage. 

The reason why this play is considered dangerous is because of the involvement of many players with huge physiques in a congested area. However, Vincent claimed that there was no injury data to support it and the argument to ban it.

This isn’t the first time the NFL Executive VP has addressed the concerns over the Eagles’ tush-push. In his appearance on PFT Live, last month, Vincent argued the play cannot be banned just because it’s the reason behind one team’s success.

Don’t punish a team that strategically does it well.

He also revealed it’s not just his personal opinion, all the NFL decision-makers are on the same page that’s why, when they met last month for the NFL Scouting Combine, none of them brought up this subject.

As per a report by The Athletics, Philly has a success rate of 90% with this quarterback sneak play, which is far more than any other team who have attempted it. Even though the NFL made no changes to the tush-push, there ought to be one with the departure of veteran center Jason Kelce, who no longer would be in the middle of the move.
