The Dallas Cowboys have just made their linebacker Micah Parsons‘ 4-year rookie deal into a 5-year deal. They have picked up the 5th year option on Parsons, in a move that surprised no one. However, general manager Jerry Jones has made a cheeky move to save some money by using a loophole.

According to the Cowboys beat reporter, Michael Gehlken, the Dallas-based organization has picked up the fifth-year option on Parsons as a defensive end, instead of a linebacker. By this move, they will save nearly $3 million.

If they picked the option as a linebacker, Parsons would’ve received a salary of $24 million as a linebacker. But now, as a defensive end, he would only make $21.32 million. This applies only if he plays under the fifth-year option for the 2025 season. The Cowboys could easily give a contract extension for him ahead of the 2025 season and this won’t be an issue for both parties.

According to data from Pro Football Focus, Parsons played more than 87% of defensive snaps from the line of scrimmage. So, the Cowboys could argue they picked the position, which resembles the 3-time Pro Bowl linebacker. But will that argument satisfy Parsons and more importantly his agent?

Parsons’ agent could make a fuss about Dallas’ cheeky move. But, as previously mentioned, it’s unlikely the linebacker would play under a 5th-year option in 2025. The Cowboys have only picked up the option to give themselves some time to negotiate Parsons’ extension. The 2-time All-Pro linebacker would certainly get paid a lot more if he extends his deal instead of playing on the option. So, he would look to get an extension done ahead of the 2025 season.

Many believe the Cowboys could make Parsons and his agent very angry with their move to save $2.7 million. Fans bashed Jerry Jones for ‘disrespecting’ one of the best players on his roster. Check out some of the reactions attached below.

Nonetheless, the Cowboys have a lot on their plate right now. They have to negotiate new deals with their star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and quarterback Dak Prescott. So, they are just buying time to negotiate a deal with Parsons. It’s highly unlikely the linebacker would play the 2025 season under the option.
