The National Football League is all set to restart in a couple of months’ time and as always there’s plenty of debate regarding which team has the best quarterback in the league. Leading NFL analyst, Craig Carton had a shocking stance on the subject as he claimed New York GiantsDaniel Jones is the best rushing quarterback in the league.

For the unversed, a rushing quarterback possesses a dual threat attached to himself, in the sense that he can impact a game through his pass-making and rushing ability. The number of rushing quarterbacks in the NFL has increased drastically in the past decade, as teams have started looking to gain an added advantage from their signal caller.

Craig Carton said, “Daniel Jones is arguably the best rushing QB in the NFL,” while speaking on Fox Sports’ The Carton show. Jones performed admirably for the Giants in the last season and his rushing numbers received a much-needed boost, as he recorded 708 yards in the 16 games.

The 26-year-old also became the first Giants player to record 200 passing yards and 100 rushing yards for which he was also named the NFC offensive player of the week. Jones aggregates 1708 rushing yards during his four-year career in the NFL, which is decent by itself but in all fairness, the league has better rushing quarterbacks at the moment.

In the modern-day game, Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson and Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts can be hailed as the best rushing quarterbacks in the league. Lamar Jackson set the record for the most rushing yards during the 2019 season, with 1,206 yards. He is also the only quarterback in the history of the NFL to have two 1000+ yard rushing seasons. In his five seasons in the NFL, Jackson has a total tally of 4,437 rushing yards.

Jalen Hurts had a breakout season in 2022/23, wherein he displayed his rushing capabilities leading the Eagles to an NFC Championship victory. The 24-year-old broke a franchise rushing record during their Week 12 clash against the Green Bay Packers. He recorded a whopping 157 yards on the gridiron, breaking Michael Vick’s record from 2010. Hurts’ overall tally in rushing yards currently stands at 1,898 yards in his three-year career at the highest level.

While Hurts’ rushing numbers might not be as great as Jackson, he is definitely one to look forward to in the coming season. As things stand currently Craig Carton’s claim therefore sounds bizarre as Daniel Jones is definitely not the best-rushing quarterback in the NFL, but he has shown signs of fulfilling his true potential in the past year.

As a reward for his improved performances, Jones earned himself a four-year contract extension worth a whopping $160 million at the Giants this season, including a guaranteed pay of $82 million to be paid in the first two years.
