Earlier this year, the Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest in the middle of a regular season game. The Bills’ training staff saved the life of Hamlin by giving him CPR on the field before he could be transferred to a local hospital. And now, more than six months after the incident, the DP honored the training staff by presenting them the Pat Tillman Award at the ESPYs.
On Wednesday night, Damar Hamlin got very emotional and cried on stage before presenting the Bills’ trainers the Pat Tillman Award at the ESPY Awards. Nate Breske, the Buffalo Bills‘ head athletic trainer, received the award from Hamlin with his entire crew behind him on the stage. At that moment, Hamlin broke down in tears and started crying as Breske and other trainers gave Hamlin a hug in a heartwarming moment.
Before handing the team the award, Hamlin talked about the incident in a video and said, “I didn’t wake up that morning in January thinking that I would need someone to save my life that day, and I doubt that the staff thought that they had to do what they did either.”
Furthermore, the 25-year-old defensive back Hamlin also talked about what he has learned from the incident and praised the entire team of the Bills’ trainers as his heroes.
“What I’ve taken away from what happened to me six and a half months ago, is that any of us at any given time are capable of doing something that’s incredible, in saving a life and living a life in service to others,” he continued. “It’s a blessing. It’s a responsibility. Anyone could be a hero. These are mine.”
ESPY Awards is an annual event conducted by ESPN to honor top sports performances and athletes across the country. This year, the event was held at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and was attended by many top celebrities, including Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James, and Olivia Dunne.
Damar Hamlin is gearing up for a return to the football field
When the six-foot defensive back Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field and was admitted to the Cincinnati hospital, the whole football world prayed for his speedy recovery.
It looks like the prayers have worked. The 25-year-old DB has made a surprise recovery and is now gearing up for his return to professional football. Back in April, Hamlin conducted a press interview where he announced his decision to return to the field.
Hamlin has already started training with the Buffalo-based football team. He is expected to make his comeback in the upcoming regular season. Besides, it should be noted that the talented defensive back is currently the betting favorite to win the Comeback Player of the Year award for the 2023 season.
