The New York Giants shocked everyone in the 2023 off-season by giving a massive contract extension to their QB, Daniel Jones, with an average annual salary of $40 million. However, now a new report suggests that Jones’ agents expected a massive contract worth $47 million per year. That contract would’ve made Jones a higher-paid signal-caller than the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in annual average salary.
According to The Athletic reporter Dan Duggan, the 27-year-old QB Daniel Jones’ camp drove a tougher bargain expected in the off-season. The Giants QB reportedly asked for a whopping $47 million per year contract at the beginning of the negotiations. But that’s how negotiations work. The New York-based football team could’ve started their negotiations at $33-35 million per, and they eventually found a middle ground at $40 million per year.
Jones still got a massive contract. He signed a four-year deal that is worth up to $160 million, including $82 million in guarantees. That contract makes Jones one of the highest-paid players of all time. Many people thought the Giants made a mistake giving Jones that kind of money, but experts believe it is a good deal since the contract includes “an escape hatch” that allows the G-Men to move on from Jones just after two seasons.
“His deal is basically a three-year, $37.5M deal, given that the fourth year pays out $47.5M,” Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk added about Jones on Wednesday. “That’s basically a team-held option that will be exercised only if the Giants believe $47.5M is a good deal.”
Therefore, if Daniel Jones doesn’t end up successful in New York in the next two seasons, the Giants can move on from him following the 2024 season, according to multiple reports. When there’s a scarcity of good signal callers in the league, the G-Men made a good move to keep their former 1st round pick tied to their team.
