Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel just secured the bag, the ‘Wide Back’ signed a contract extension worth $73.5 million for three years with $58 million guaranteed. The offseason was rather tumultuous for him as he was holding out for the most part from the team until the extension talks went his way. Earlier reports had indicated that Deebo was reluctant about how the San Francisco 49ers integrated him into the offense.
The team made him a dynamic wide back, he played wideout and running back which he reportedly did not enjoy as he felt that he would be able to help the team better by playing the position he was meant to. The WR even requested a trade initially and cited this as the primary reason for doing so but it seems with time and more money, Deebo has changed his mind about wanting to be a dynamic receiver.

Deebo Samuel brushes reports expressing his reluctance to play RB as ‘made up’

Deebo Samuel recently spoke to the media following his extension. The wideout seemed to be rather exuberant and happy to be in San Francisco, in all likelihood, he took a look at his bank balance before speaking to reporters. Samuel stuck by his team and gave rather diplomatic answers by stating that he is excited about the team and is looking forward to this season as they have a new quarterback in Trey Lance.
One of the questions that surfaced was related to Samuel’s initial complaints of being used as a running back more than a wideout. This was something the wideout was not comfortable doing but he seems to have grown to enjoy the role and accept it as he publicly dismissed all reports that stated he did not want to play RB.
He classified all those reports as “false” and that “At this point, they’re just making up stuff.” That new contract clearly changed his mind about the position he wishes to play. Deebo has established himself as quite the weapon in the NFL. In 2021, he got 77 catches for 1,405 yards and he added 365 yards in rushing with a total of 14 TDs.
Coach Shanahan’s wideback strategy worked as Samuel got 136 touches and 59 carries last season. “There was a lot of things that came out that I wanted to speak on, but at the end of the day, I wasn’t allowed to. You can turn on the tape, and go back to the Cowboys (playoff) game, it kind of shows what kind of player I am. Turn on the Pro Bowl tape and what I said about being a wide back, I don’t mind doing whatever it takes for this team to win,” Samuel concluded.
Now that Deebo has been paid, we look forward to him having yet another stellar year with new quarterback Trey Lance in the mix as well.
