Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has finally come out of what can easily be termed the worst period of his professional career. The 27-year-old received as many as 26 sexual harassment cases to his name and finally spoke his mind about how it impacted him personally.
Watson revealed that the whole controversy eventually changed him as a person and enabled him to identify people who would be there for him, even at his “lowest point.” He also claimed to have learned a lot from the situation and vowed to look forward in life.
“The whole situation changed me. In a situation where I just had to lock in on myself, channel, and really know who I’m surrounding myself with and just really who’s going to be there and support me even when I’m at my lowest point and the last few years were definitely the lowest point in my life,” Watson said during the Browns‘ training camp.
He further explained how he plans to come out of ‘low points’ of life by saying, “But that’s part of life. I just grow from it, I learn from it. I continue to move forward and push forward and continue to show my real character, my real personality and who I am.”
Deshaun Watson’s sexual harassment incidents took place during his time with the Houston Texans
It all started in 2021 when a masseuse filed a complaint against the then-Houston Texans quarterback for sexually harassing her during their massage therapy sessions. More and more women came out with their complaints subsequently. A woman even accused Watson of forcing himself onto her to aggressively ask for oral intercourse without her consent.
After a lengthy investigation due to these allegations, the NFL eventually imposed an 11-game suspension on Deshaun Watson along with a hefty fine of $5 million and mandatory evaluation by behavioral experts. However, even during the entire controversy, Brown gained a lot financially as he earned himself a whopping $230 million guaranteed pay contract with the Browns.
Deshaun Watson made a return to the gridiron after completing his suspension against his former franchise, the Texans, and started a total of 6 games in 2022/23. He did not disappoint with his performances notching up seven touchdowns along with 1,102 throwing yards during the regular season as the Browns finished fourth in the AFC North division.
