Devon Witherspoon and the Seattle Seahawks defense made a mockery of Daniel Jones and the New York Giants yesterday. Witherspoon capped off the night with two sacks and an interception return for a touchdown.
Right from the beginning, the home side looked disjointed. Not being able to complete a successful drive was creating pressure, and the Seattle Seahawks offensive line kept pushing them back.
Witherspoon’s pick-6 basically seals the deal in favor of the visitors. Not only did he return it for 97 yards, but the touchdown caused a minor scuffle near the Giants dugout. The rookie cornerback from Illinois intercepted the pass and ran the course of the field without much interference. After the game, he revealed that Jones’ strategy was becoming easier to read. “We knew he liked to stare down his first target,” Witherspoon told the NFL Network. “We were just trusting the game plan the coaches laid out for us.”
The 22-year-old acknowledged the hard work at the line of scrimmage by teammates Bobby Wagner and Jordyn Brooks. Their constant pressure on Jones created openings for secondaries in the backfield like Witherspoon and Tariq Woolen to pounce on the loose pass. “He had his back turned, and a lot of guys were winning the one-on-one matchups up front,” he said. “Without them, we couldn’t make the plays that we made.”
Pete Carroll was surprised by Devon Witherspoon’s performance
There were several positives for Seattle head coach Pete Carroll to choose from in the Giants game. Not only did they score 24 points yesterday, but they shut the door on their opponent’s offense, letting in only a field goal in the first quarter. He has the offensive lineman to thank, who collectively sacked Daniel Jones 10 times.
However, the star of the game was undoubtedly Devon Witherspoon. The Flordia native clocked 20.25 mph on the day. If he hadn’t been struggling with a hamstring nudge, then the speed would have been even greater. But the most impressive part was his two picks, a couple of sacks, and six take-ons. “I never thought he wouldn’t play like this,” Pete Carroll said in the postmatch press conference, as per NFL.com. “This is why we took him.”
The Seahawks saw the potential to be special in the 5-foot-11 Witherspoon and snapped him up as the 5th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. “He’s an explosive, dynamic player,” the veteran head coach continued. “We didn’t have enough time [talking about his hamstring]. Although he’s been working at it the whole time, did a great job tonight.”
Devon Witherspoon was playing because primary safety Jamal Adams had to go off after a collision with Daniel Jones. Adams will likely miss the next game against the Cincinnati Bengals, which means more opportunities to shine for Witherspoon.
