“You dropped Baker for a s*xual assaulter”: Fans reprimand Browns for releasing ‘damage control’ statements after Baker Mayfield trade

Cleveland Browns, what a franchise and what an offseason this has turned out to be for them. They have managed to stay in the news which isn’t a bad thing for an NFL franchise. However, the reasons for which the team has made the headlines aren’t going to please a lot of their admirers.

First, they made it absolutely clear that they aren’t interested in giving Baker Mayfield another chance and went all in to get Deshaun Watson. After much deliberation, they were able to rope him in for a massive amount. However, the QB’s legal troubles landed them in a very tricky situation.

Fans were expecting them to go back to Baker but the QB wanted out. Most recently, the Browns traded Baker to the Carolina Panthers and that too in exchange for a conditional fifth round pick. Now, if Deshaun gets suspended, Baker is not there anymore and in that case, the Browns will end up high and dry.

After the trade, the Browns released a statement thanking Baker for all he has done for the team. “Baker Mayfield infused our organization with tenacity and grit during his time as our starting quarterback. Baker’s competitiveness, toughness and ability to persevere were all characteristics that endeared him to our city as well as his teammates. He will always have a unique place in Browns history for what he accomplished and we wish him well as he continues his career,” Andrew Berry’s statement read.

However, a lot of fans were not pleased with the words and called it a ‘damage control’ statement. Many also pointed out that Browns had a quarterback who was winning games for them but they traded him after one bad season. Here are a few reactions to the statement:

Needless to say, the Browns will find them in deep trouble if Deshaun is banned. It will be interesting to see if Baker can guide the Panthers out of misery in the coming season.
