The NFL referees have come under a lot of criticism this season. They have been the center of attention almost every game as they have been inconsistent in their officiating throughout the campaign. A lot of current as well as former players have criticized the level of officiating this season and calls have been made to the NFL to do something about it.

The Dallas Cowboys vs. Detroit Lions game on Saturday was another game marred by officiating controversy. The game’s final play, which was a 2-point conversion attempt by the Lions, was flagged for illegal touching. However, that play could have been avoided if not for another missed call on the Cowboys’ previous possession.

With 2:05 left, the Cowboys intercepted Jared Goff at the Lions’ 29-yard line, giving them a 17–13 lead. The next play, Tony Pollard‘s 7-yard run was disregarded after a tripping call against Dallas’ TE Peyton Hendershot, the Cowboys were forced to begin a first-and-25 on the Lions’ 44. However, replays showed that the call should’ve gone against the Lions’ DE Aidan Hutchinson.

Brad Allen, who was the lead official for the game, is expected to be demoted along with his officiating crew. That will have an impact on the officials chosen for the postseason. The Cowboys eventually won the game 20-19 and improved to a record of 11-5.
