Miami Dolphins star QB Tua Tagovailoa‘s rollercoaster of a season continues as he enters the NFL concussion protocol for the second time this season. Yet, he somehow played the entirety of their game against the Green Bay Packers without apparent injury.
The Alabama product had already entered the concussion protocol once after taking a hard hit against the Cincinnati Bengals in week 4. He was hospitalized for a short time after that game and missed two games before returning to play in week 7. Just a few days before that game, Dolphins HC was heavily criticized for allowing Tagovailoa to continue the game after taking a hard hit against the Buffalo Bills. He was evaluated and allowed to stay in the game, even though he showed concussion symptoms during the game.
During the second quarter of the Packers-Dolphins game, Tua Tagovailoa appeared to bang his head on the ground while being tackled by a Packers player. However, Miami head coach Mike McDaniel, in the post-game presser, said it is unclear when Tua might have suffered a concussion. McDaniel also said that the third-year QB admitted to having concussion symptoms on Monday. He was then immediately placed on the concussion protocol.
The NFL concussion protocol, which started in 2011, involves various steps of treatments that a player must take before he could be medically cleared to play. After the incident, the NFL updated its concussion protocol to mandate that a player should sit out the remainder of the game if he showed concussion symptoms, including a lack of balance or stability.
Dolphins backup QB Teddy Bridgewater will practice with the first team this week. Although HC McDaniel said it is too early to name a starting quarterback. Miami Dolphins have a record of 8-7 and have lost their last four games. They will have to win out the rest of their games to secure a playoff spot.
NFL fans want Tua Tagovailoa to consider retirement
On Monday, Miami Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel announced that their star quarterback Tagovailoa was placed in concussion protocol for the second time this season.
On account of this, NFL fans on social media want Tua to consider retirement or at least sitting out the rest of the season citing his long-term health. Some fans posted a video that shows Tua taking a hard hit to the head during the Packers-Dolphins game and mentioned that might be the play where Tua suffered a concussion. That hit happened in the second quarter of the game, after which Tua threw three INTs in the second half.
As for the Dolphins, they are one step inside the NFL playoffs. If they win their remaining games, they will clinch a playoff spot. Miami has to defeat the Patriots and the Jets to achieve their goal.
