Former Seattle Seahawks Shaquem Griffin, NFL’s first one-handed player announces SHOCK retirement aged 27
Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker, Shaquem Griffin has announced his retirement from the NFL after only 4 seasons at the top level. The 27-year-old made history in the NFL, by becoming the first one-handed player to play in the NFL.
Griffin announced the news of his retirement in a long 52-paragraph letter written to his fans for the Players’ Tribune. The Seahawks drafted him in the 2018 NFL draft, and it gave rise to one of the most wholesome stories the league has ever witnessed.
Shaquem Griffin will continue to remain an inspiration to many who want to join the NFL
Shaquem Griffin developed a congenital condition at the age of 4, courtesy of an amniotic band syndrome which resulted in the amputation of his left hand. Despite the oddity, the linebacker continued to work hard and made his mark on the biggest level, as he emulated his brother, Shaquill to earn his place in the NFL.
Shaquem Griffin spent three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, after which he was signed by the Miami Dolphins in 2021 on a one-year contract. However, the franchise decided to waive him off, and he was eventually released a few months later.
The retired hero now wishes to move on to plan A, which is focusing on his education. According to him, football was always his second option as he had been told by his father since childhood.
“Plan A was to go to college, get an education and do something that would make a positive impact in the world. Football was always Plan B,” Shaquem wrote in the Players Tribune. He also revealed that what convinced him to follow this path was indeed a chat with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, where he understood the weight on his shoulders.
Throughout his career, the linebacker has shown everyone what can be achieved simply through hard work and perseverance, despite having a significant disadvantage over the others.
