Despite going the entire 2023 college season without dropping a single game (13-0), the Florida State Seminoles were not included in the playoffs. Naturally, FSU head coach Mike Norvell was more animated than usual on Sunday after the CFP committee chose the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas Longhorns over them.

The Seminoles finished fifth behind the Tide in the final CFP rankings. As it stands, Nick Saban‘s side will face No. 1 Michigan in the Rose Bowl, and No. 2 Washington will play No. 3 Texas. This was the first time in the history of college football that a one-loss team leapfrogged an unbeaten side into the playoffs.

As for Norvell and FSU, they will play in the Orange Bowl on December 30 against the reigning college ball champions, the Georgia Bulldogs, who placed sixth in the rankings.

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips shared his disappointment through an open later on X (formerly Twitter). Phillips wrote,

It's unfathomable that Florida State, an undefeated Power Five conference champion, was left out of the College Football Playoff. Their exclusion calls into question the selection process and whether the Committee's own guidelines were followed, including the significant importance of being an undefeated Power Five conference champion. My heart breaks for the talented FSU student-athletes and coaches and their passionate and loyal fans. Florida State deserved better. College football deserved better.

Phillips wasn’t the only one who was finding it hard to process why FSU doesn’t get the nod over either Alabama or Texas. A host of tweets sympathizing with the Seminoles flooded social media.

One of them was a statement from the chairman of Florida State University, Richard McCullough. He called the outcome “shocking” and the selection system “broken.”

The chair of the College Football Playoff Committee, Boo Corrigan, later revealed why they selected Alabama over FSU.

Florida State is a different team than they were through the first 11 weeks. Coach Mike Norvell and their players—their fans, you know—had an incredible season. But as you look at who they are, as a team right now without Jordan Travis, without the offense, the dynamic that he brings to the team. They are a different team, and the committee voted Alabama 4 and Florida State 5.
