It appears that Travis Kelce wasn’t the only one on the edge on Sunday night. Patrick Mahomes, too, lost his cool in the heat of the moment.

Usually, Mahomes is a very accurate passer and reads the game really well. But during a decisive play late in the fourth quarter, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback appeared to miss Rashee Rice open near the San Francisco 49ers end zone.

After taking the snap from the 49ers’ 15-yard line, Mahomes threw left to Travis Kelce, who had heavy coverage on him. On the opposite wing, rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice managed to get clear of his markers, and if the 28-year-old had found him, then it would have been a touchdown.

Rice let Mahomes know during the break in the play. That’s when the (then) two-time Super Bowl MVP lost it and lashed out at his playmaker. The CBS camera caught Mahomes screaming at Rice in the Chiefs dugout.

After the moment of madness, the Chiefs managed to crawl their way back into the game through Harrison Butker. He tied the 19-19 game with a 29-yard field goal to force overtime.

While Mahomes was finding defense-splitting passes throughout the night, he was also using his feet to good use. In overtime, Mahomes had an eight-yard run on 4th-and-1 and a 19-yard dash to keep the momentum going in favor of the Chiefs. Those plays set up the game-winning touchdown for wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr.

With three seconds left on the clock, Mahomes took the snap on first and goal. Then sidestepped the 49ers blitz to find Hardman clean through to the end zone. The Kansas City Chiefs won the game 25-22. Mahomes finished the game with 333 yards and two touchdowns on 34 of 46 passes. He also ran for a team-high 66 yards on nine carries. It was the second most by a quarterback in Super Bowl history.

Maybe Dre Greenlaw‘s injury midway through the game opened up a new avenue for the 28-year-old. He used the advantage to great benefit. The Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five years. It was the first time since Tom Brady‘s Patriots that any NFL team has won a back-to-back Super Bowl.

Patrick Mahomes was named the third Super Bowl MVP for the third time in his career. But he isn’t finished, because he has Brady in his sights.
