“I’ve got Drew Lock’s back,” Geno Smith makes himself heard as race for the Seahawks’ starting QB position intensifies

The Seattle Seahawks will undergo a major upheaval for the 2022 NFL season, in regards to their quarterback position after the departure of legendary Russell Wilson from their ranks to the Denver Broncos. The franchise are still undecided on who will take up the number 1 position in the new season, with both Geno Smith and Drew Lock vying for the role.

Geno Smith has taken up the position throughout the offseason practice camps for the Seahawks but head coach Pete Carroll has not yet finalised the name as to who will play on the 13th September against the Denver Broncos.

Geno Smith and Drew Lock are vying for the first choice quarterback role for the Seahawks

However, the competiton for spots amongst Geno Smith and Drew Lock has not reduced the quality of relationship that the duo share. This was pretty evident when Smith made it clear that he would continue to have Drew Lock’s back whatever be the decision taken by the coach and the franchise.

As far as the competition, I’m not the one judging all of that, so I’ll leave that up to the coaches,” Geno Smith told reporters. “But, I think Drew played really well, as I’ve always said, and I will go on record to say that I have his back. No matter what, I have Drew Lock’s back. I want that to be known. We’re teammates, we’re competing, but we’re in the same offense, we’re in the same room, and we’re going to make each other better.”

The 2019 NFL draft pick, Drew Lock was grateful to Smith for the encouraging words made by his senior compatriot. He claimed that he would be willing to do the same if the situation was the other way and round and will continue to do his bit for the franchise even if he ends up becoming the second choice quarterback for them in 2022.

“It means a lot,” Lock said regarding Smith’s remarks. “It’s the exact same thing I would say up here. I went through that with Teddy [Bridgewater] last year. When Teddy got announced the starter in Denver, I did everything I could do for him throughout the week and even on gamedays. I would do the same here. Going on the record saying that I got Geno’s back. I’d do everything I can throughout the week to make him feel good going into gameday on Sunday. That’s what that job is. I’d give everything I got for him if that ended up being the case.”
