On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers led by their backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky went against the Indianapolis Colts in their week 15 matchup. During the game, the Steelers receiver George Pickens became the talk of the town and it was not for good reasons. Pickens raised eyebrows with his lackluster effort while blocking for his teammates.
In a video that was trending on social media, Pickens could be seen showing zero effort in blocking his man for running back Jaylen Warren. As a result, he ended up stopping Warren from reaching the endzone, thus refusing a touchdown for the Pittsburgh-based football team. If Pickens had tried, he could’ve blocked the Colts defender from tackling Warren and it could’ve resulted in a touchdown for the Steelers.
The brief video of Pickens’ zero effort went viral on social media and accumulated more than 1.3 million views within hours of posting. It was reshared by many users and Pickens was subjected to massive scrutiny because of his effort, or lack thereof. Check out the footage of the incident attached below.
This is not the first time Pickens has been criticized for his efforts in blocking. Just last week, many Steelers fans pointed out how Pickens showed zero interest in blocking for his teammates in their loss against the New England Patriots. He also had a meltdown on the sidelines due to his poor outing that week.
In fact, Pickens is not even the first Pittsburgh wide receiver to have shown no hustle attitude in this season. Just a few weeks before, Dionte Johnson did a similar thing and later had to apologize for it. So, it seems like it is more of a coaching issue.
Mike Tomlin recently called out George Pickens over his attitude
George Pickens has always been labeled a wide receiver with some attitude issues. That’s why he fell to the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft despite his talents and potential.
Amidst this, the Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin publicly called out Pickens after the wide receiver expressed his frustrations in their week 14 loss against the Patriots.
It’s a problem because it’s not solution-oriented. You know we are all frustrated, but we got to manage our frustrations in a professional, mature way. When it’s not done that way, it’s not necessarily pushing us to solutions.Tomlin told reporters on Monday
Nonetheless, if Pickens continued to play like this, there’s a large possibility he might get traded away from the Steelers in the upcoming off-season. For now, he will continue with the Steelers and look to help them seal a spot in the postseason.
