Former Raider Henry Ruggs earns $2.50 per hour in Nevada prison camp for fatal car incident

Former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs was incarcerated at Stewart Conservation Camp, a minimum security facility in Carson City. As per reports, Ruggs, who once earned millions, receives the minimum wage doing government-assigned work inside the prison.

The Stewart Conservation Camp is a 45-minute drive northwest of Las Vegas from the Northern Nevada Correctional Center, where he was imprisoned in August 2023. As per 8Newsnow.com, Ruggs, who was a key member of the Raiders side in 2021, earns around $2.50 per hour as a community trusty.

Ruggs was initially booked at High Desert State Prison on Aug. 9, 2023, after he pleaded guilty to drunk driving causing a deadly crash. He was driving roughly at 156 mph and ended up killing 23-year-old Tina Tintor and her dog. As per the investigation, he had a blood alcohol level of 0.016, which is twice the legal limit.

The 25-year-old was sentenced to 3–10 years, which O.J. Simpson had an issue with. Court’s leniency towards Ruggs perplexed the disgraced former NFL runningback. The Alabama graduate is due for parole in 2026, and until then, he will remain part of the ‘dormitory-style facility work,’ which, according to their website,

'represents a limited potential to misbehave and represents a low risk of escaping.'

How much was Ruggs earning with the Raiders?

Mark Davis‘ management team drafted Ruggs in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. As per Spotrac’s record, the Tide wideout signed a four-year, $16,671,626 contract with the Vegas franchise. The Ruggs contract included a $9,684,820 signing bonus and $16,671,626 in guaranteed money. However, due to his ending up in prison, the Raiders terminated his contract.

Before the accident, he played 20 games for the Raiders. He had 50 receptions for 921 yards with an average of 18.4 yards per catch, scoring four touchdowns. Besides being a promising receiver, Ruggs also contributed as a returner. He had 11 returns for 211 yards with 2 fumbles and 2 loss of possessions.

Ruggs had three standout campaigns in Alabama. He played 40 games, catching 90 passes for 1716 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns, lifting the CFP National Championship in his rookie season. There, he shared the field with the likes of Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith, Denver Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy, and Miami Dolphins receiver Jaylen Waddle.
