Refereeing in any professional sport is a tough job. The entire ebb and flow of the game depend on the referee’s call and it is of utmost importance to the end result. Even more so when it is in a contact sport like the NFL wherein on-field decisions need to be decisive and quick. In recent times there has been an extreme backlash on the quality of refereeing in the game.

Many fans as well as players and coaches have raised their voices when they have felt they were on the wrong side of decisions. Hence it is understandable that being a referee is a tedious task and one that comes with a lot of responsibility.

Gender discrimination in sports has been happening for a long time and everyone is witness to it but slowly re-partitions are being made. At the moment the NFL has three female referees namely Maia Chaka, Sarah Thomas, and Robin DeLorenzo.

At the moment referees get paid a sum of $1500 per game they officiate as per Pro Football Network. The average salary for officials in the NFL is $205,000 per year.

I’ve always loved the actual game of football since I was little,” Robin said after her debut. “I gotta be honest, though. My father being an official it never dawned on me, because there were no women doing this.”

Earlier there were only two NFL female referees but DeLorenzo joined in 2022. Speaking of the first NFL female referee, that honor goes to Sarah Thomas who set the record in 2015. Additionally, she has also worked in the Super Bowl LIV between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, she is also the first woman to officiate a major college football game and the first woman to be a referee in a game in the NFL Playoffs.

Sarah Thomas has made history again as the first female Super Bowl official. Her elite performance and commitment to excellence has earned her the right to officiate the Super Bowl. Congratulations to Sarah on this well-deserved honor,” said NFL executive vice-president of football operations Troy Vincent.

Maia Chaka became the first black NFL female referee in September of 2021. Equality is something all of us should strive for and it is great to see the NFL taking steps in the right direction.
