“I was thinking Tom Brady wouldn’t play,” Bruce Arians makes a shocking revelation on how Brady influenced coach’s retirement
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had quite an offseason with multiple changes within the roster and in their coaching staff. It all started with their leading quarterback, Tom Brady calling it time on his esteemed NFL career in February, which set the cats among the pigeons within the camp.
The franchise went through uncertain phases as to who would replace Brady at the pivotal position, but that lasted only 40 days. The 44-year old made a U-turn on his decision to retire and will play on through the 2022 season.
Bruce Arians would not have handed over the reins to Todd Bowles if Tom Brady did not play
However, then came along another twist, which saw their head coach Bruce Arians leave his position. He left his role to be succeeded by Todd Bowles, who served as the defensive coordinator of the franchise.
Bruce Arians has now come out and made a scathing statement that he would have continued to serve as the head coach for the Buccaneers if Tom Brady did not unretire. Arians claimed that he would not have left Todd Bowles a weakened side, and would have hence continued in the role.
“I was going the other way. I was thinking he wasn’t going to play,” Arians said, per the Tampa Bay Times. “I was thinking about who are we going to get? Who wants to trade? There wasn’t anybody to draft. That was obvious. Me, to the public, I was fine with the two we had: Blaine (Gabbert) and Kyle (Trask). Because I’ve seen Blaine win with a good team behind him. Had Tom not come back, I probably would still be coaching. I couldn’t give Todd that situation.”
