The football fever is picking up throughout the world. Some countries have begun to innovate and give their own unique twist to the sport! Germany, for instance, has made American Ice Football popular. What’s different about it, you ask? Well, it is football, but instead of a turf; you have the slippery floor of a skating rink below your feet. Now, go score a touchdown wearing shoes on that surface.
American Ice Football ironically aired just before the Super Bowl this year. It comprises four teams, namely the Westside Wessis, the Eastside Ossis, the Northcoast Naughties, and the Southside Smoothies. The teams have 30 celebrities playing in the game in total. They wear the same uniform as prescribed by the NFL. The league aired for just one night, just hours before the Super Bowl, and they had their own halftime show!
Mark Foster was the halftime act this year. The network RTL is the mastermind behind this unique event. American Ice Football is an attempt to get German audiences, who are fast gaining interest in the game, something to be excited about. The fact that it featured popular celebrities from across the country goes to show that there is a considerable fanbase for the game overseas.
American Ice Football is an entertaining concept that could excite fans in the US as well
Fans gathered in the arena were allowed to witness their favorite celebrities slide across the icy surface attempting to score touchdowns! It was hilarious to see, and definitely not easy. It requires one to balance themselves while running up and down the floor. The slightest mistake can have the player slipping up and down the ice turf.
Fans in the US loved this concept and reacted to it on social media:
That was our Super Bowl warm up program here in Germany. Now it’s time for the US to make this a big thing ?

If only there were a show with a sharp blade on the bottom that could help with their footing

I could watch an entire season of this.

This could definitely make its way to the US and more importantly, if the same format were applied here, featuring celebrities on teams, then the viewership would go through the roof! Ice football could be a suitable alternative started off in the offseason for viewers so that they are able to enjoy the game throughout the year, uninterrupted.
