“Indebted FOREVER”: Here’s how Tom Brady risks losing over HALF of his net worth to Gisele Bündchen in the event of a divorce
Tom Brady and Gisele Bündhchen
Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen seem to be headed toward a divorce. As unfortunate as that may be, this split may end up leaving the quarterback damaged emotionally and financially as well. If the couple does opt to file for divorce, then Tom risks losing not just his wife and kids, but may also be compelled to lose an estimated 50% of his total net worth.
Tom Brady‘s net worth stands at $250 million if you happen to check online, but that figure does not paint the entire picture. Throughout his 23-year football career, the quarterback has earned well on the field from his contracts but it is his business interests and partnerships off the field that have really paid him enough so that he does not need to work another day in his life once he retires.
Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen signed a prenuptial agreement before their marriage in 2009.
At the time of marriage, the duo in all likelihood have signed a prenuptial agreement, which is essentially a document that allows the parties in a marriage to protect their assets such as family estates and other valuables from being divided in case of a separation between the two in the future. However, prenups do not completely remove the liability from either of the parties’ hands, as the assets that have been acquired jointly during the time of marriage have to be divided in a manner acceptable to both.
Considering all celebrity couples do opt for a prenup, we are moving with the assumption that Brady and Gisele have done the same because that is the best way for him to hold on to a significant portion of his wealth. If he made the blunder of not signing one, then he will be on the hot seat as every penny that he has earned since 2009, after the date of his marriage, he risks losing.
Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen‘s marriage made them one of the richest celebrity couples in the world, with the former worth over a quarter of a billion and the latter worth an estimated $400 million, both of them are well-off and are financially independent individuals.
However, once divorce lawyers enter the mix, nobody’s asset pool is safe as both their attorneys will attempt to give their client the upper hand and ensure they leave the negotiation table richer. As per Karen Jeary, an expert in divorce matters and associate solicitor at Mayo Wynne Baxter, a prominent legal firm, Tom Brady risks losing a lot of money to Gisele. The quarterback may end up being indebted to her more, not just emotionally but financially as well.
In a statement that she made to Marca, she shared her professional opinion on the situation between Tom and Gisele, “Given the extent of Tom’s estimated wealth, $400 million, and that under U.S. Matrimonial law the starting point for the division of assets is 50/50, hopefully, Tom had the foresight to enter into a pre-nuptial agreement with Gisele to protect, in so far as possible, his pre-acquired wealth.”
The worst-case scenario is that Brady does not have a prenup. In that case, he could owe nearly $200 million to Gisele Bündchen, which is a hefty sum. This would put him right up there next to Michael Jordan, who separated from Juanita Vanoy and had to pay her nearly $168 million. If this amount were to be adjusted for inflation, then it would be nearly $246 million in 2022. Clearly not a category in which Tom Brady would want to share a place with Michael Jordan.
Though Tom is the most accomplished quarterback in NFL history, he is also one of the most underpaid ones. He has taken salary cuts on numerous occasions to hold the roster together. He has not earned as much from a single long-term contract as the young quarterbacks, such as Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, who are earning from their long-term deals with nearly the entire amount guaranteed.
Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen’s divorce is not yet official as neither of them has filed for it, however, given that the one thing both of them agree upon is sharing joint custody of kids-Benjamin, 12, and Vivian, 9. We can hope that it will not result in Brady’s net worth reducing by 50% or more. Tom is still attempting to reunite and work on his marriage, but Gisele seems to have lost hope after he went against her will and returned to the Buccaneers for one last season.
