“It ain’t necessarily what I want, but…”: Taysom Hill wants to play for the team and not himself
Taysom Hill is loyal to his team and wants the best for his them even if it means playing in a new position every season. Last season the Swiss army knife was competing with Jameis Winston for the QB spot.
This season things are looking a bit different. After the arrival of new coach Dennis Allen in the Saints camp, Hill is asked to play a new position yet again, now as a TE.
The 31-year-old has played quarterback, fullback, tight end, receiver, kickoff returner and punt blocker through five seasons with the Saints.
“Things aren’t up to me,” Hill said, via the Saints website. “I’m willing to do what I need to do to help us win football games… I love playing, and so it creates opportunities for me to add value and be on the field and compete… That’s the nature of the NFL. This isn’t necessarily what I want, it’s what’s best for the team and I’m good with that.”
“I’ve taken that mind-set into the tight end position.”: Taysom Hill on playing in his new position
Taysom Hill is a rare and versatile athlete who can adapt to different positions as per the team and the coach’s demands. Though his natural position is Quarterback and long aspired to play in that position he will have to settle with playing as a Tight End.
“I’ve never done that before,” Hill said. “Like I said, we started from ground zero, and we just started building from there.” The 31 year old has never played in the tight end position permanently, though he dabbled a bit in that position including RB, and FB.
Last season he was competing with Winston and now he’ll be catching passes from him. Quite a transition. “I’m still very raw in a lot of this stuff, but it’s nice to get some exposure,” Hill said when asked about his new position.
Taysom Hill replied gracefully when asked about how will he approach the new position of which he knows very little about. “I kind of just do what I would want a tight end to do if I was playing quarterback for that rep,” Hill said. “I’ve taken that mindset into the tight end position.”
If there would be an award for the most loyal and adaptive football player then Hill would win it every year, such is his capability. The 31 year old went undrafted in 2017 and later signed with the Saints and now is the most versatile player in the team if not the NFL.
