“It breaks my heart,” Derek Carr bids adieu to the Raiders in a heartfelt letter after nine seasons

Derek Carr joined the Las Vegas Raiders in 2014 as a second round pick in the NFL Draft. During his first four seasons with them he went on to the Pro Bowl three times. Today the highly decorated quarterback bid farewell to a nine year long journey.

Carr had a great record with the Raiders as he went 63-79 in 142 starts for them and completed 64.8% of his throws for 35,222 yards, 217 touchdowns and 99 interceptions across nine seasons. In 2022 he completed 60.8% of his throws for 3,522 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in the fifteen games he started.

However he was benched for the remaining two games of the season. Derek Carr signed a contract extension last year for three years worth $121.5 million. If he remains with the Raiders or agrees to a trade before 15 February, he is guaranteed to $40 million payment.

Derek Carr posted a heartfelt goodbye to the Las Vegas Raiders fans on his Twitter as well as Instagram account on Thursday. The quarterback thanked the Raiders for the support they have provided him over the nine years. However he did add that it was upsetting to him that he didn’t get to say goodbye in person to the fans.

Raider Nation it breaks my heart I didn’t get an opportunity to say goodbye in person,” Carr wrote. “We certainly have been on a roller coaster in our nine years together. From the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful and appreciative of the years of support you gave to my family and me.

We had our share of both heart breaking moments and thrilling game winning drives, and it always felt like you were there next to me. It’s especially hard to say goodbye because I can honestly say that I gave you everything I had, every single day, in season, and in the off-season. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but I hope that I was able to leave you with more than a few great memories as Raider fans.”

Derek Carr mentioned that he never imagined his time at the Las Vegas Raiders would end in such a manner as he always wanted to give his 100% for them. However that hunger to win a championship remains within him and he’s ready to do so for another team as well.

I once said that if I’m not a Raider, I would rather be at home and I meant that, but I never envisioned it ending this way,” Carr said. “That fire burning inside of me to win a championship still rages. A fire no man can extinguish; only God. So I look forward to a new city and a new team who, no matter the circumstance, will get everything I have. Winning a championship is what I’ve always wanted and what I will continue to work toward.”
