“It comes down to what else is on our roster”: Coach Dan Campbell reflects on the possibility of keeping 2 QBs

The Lions are looking to change their form which has been unsatisfactory for the past couple of seasons. Recently, Dan Campbell expressed the possibility of keeping 2 QBs after the practice session on Tuesday.

Due to the implications of COVID in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, most of the teams in the NFL kept 3 QBs on their 53-man roster but the times have changed and Lion’s head coach is exploring the possibility to cut one QB down.

“Well, I think most of it comes down to what else is on our roster. That’s what it’s going to come down to.” Campbell responded when asked about the possibility of keeping 2 QBs.

“Is it – are you keeping a quarterback three versus a stud special teams player? Or, someone you know is going to play 30 snaps for you on defense, he’d be a critical role player, or what – I think that’s what it’s going to come down to honestly.”

Jared Goff is Lion’s number 1 QB currently and I don’t think it will change for a long time. The 27-year-old had 19 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions and threw for 3,245 yards.

‘Tim Boyle or David Blough’ who will coach Dan Campbell pick as the No. 2 QB?

David Plough and Tim Boyle

The battle is on for the No.2 spot for the QB between Tim Boyle and David Blough. Both of the players were brought back this season as free agents after being on the roster last year. The organization has done their part to keep both of them in the team.

Both Boyle and Blough have performed averagely when given a chance in the regular season and it’s hard to determine if one is better than the other. If Goff is to be injured then neither of these 2 can be counted upon to perform the way Goff has been performing.

Lion is in a conundrum to choose the loser of this battle as the QB free agent pool is very shallow and either one of them will likely be picked by another team. They currently don’t have a young arm in the camp and this can create problems for them.

Dan Campbell and the Lions may risk losing one of them by giving a chance to rookie TE James Mitchell whos showing a lot of promise and also Anthony Pittman who is a standout in the specials team.

Only time will tell what decision is coach Campbell making regarding the 3rd QB spot.
