“It didn’t go my way” Panthers QB Sam Darnold makes a bold statement on losing out the No.1 spot to Baker Mayfield

Competition is a tricky thing and it’s very common in the NFL when one QB replaces another QB for the starting position. That’s the thing that happened with Sam Darnold who tried to compete with Baker Mayfield for the starting position.
Both the Panther’s QB were given starts to determine who will reserve the spot for the week 1 showdown against the Browns and it was Mayfield who was better than Darnold.
Sam Darnold was the No.2 QB since he was drafted in 2018 and it hasn’t changed since then. Darnold said that the outcome ‘sucks’ but the competition between the two Panther’s QB was healthy and fair and Darnold is committed to helping Mayfield as his number 2.
“We were fighting for the starting job. Every day was our game day out there during camp, especially as we got into these last couple weeks. . . . Obviously it didn’t go my way.” Sam Darnold said in a press conference. “Coach named Baker the starter. My mindset is it is what it is. For me, right now, I’m gonna do everything I can to support Baker and get him ready to play a game.”
Sam Darnold will earn a salary of $18 million this year as the Panthers activated his 5th year in his current contract, but he’ll have to take the salary by sitting on the bench as a backup to Mayfield.
“When we started this process, we were looking at three things”: Panthers coach Matt Rhule on selecting the No.1 QB

Baker Mayfield was acquired from a trade with the Browns and will face his former team in week 1 of the NFL. When coach Matt Rhule was asked about how he chose the No.1 QB, he had an interesting answer.
“When we started this process, we were looking at three things,” Rhule said. “Number one, mastery of the offense, number two, situational football excellence, and number three, moving the ball and getting guys involved. That’s been our focus all along.
Rhule went on to further state that Baker has improved in all of these areas and is showing a lot of promise currently. “It’s not a redemption year,” Mayfield said last week. “I know what I’m capable of. I’m not trying to prove anything to anybody else. I’m just trying to lead this locker room the best I can and win a bunch of ballgames.’’
The Panthers will face Buffalo Bills in their preseason finale before the start of the season and both the QBs are expected to play that game.
