The Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt decided to switch teams and join a contender back in 2021. When exploring his options in free agency, he almost ended up signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. If he had signed with the Steelers, he would’ve joined his brothers OLB T.J. Watt and FB Derek Watt in Pittsburgh.
During a recent episode of The Green Light Podcast, J.J. Watt talked about his potential signing with the Steelers and why he ultimately decided against it.
“They were on the list. It certainly would have been awesome to play with my brothers, but T.J. was also going through the contract situation there, so the last thing I wanted to do was come in and take any money away from his contract,” Watt said.
Nonetheless, the elder Watt brother essentially ended up signing with the Arizona Cardinals. The Cards started their season strongly with a 7-0 record but ended up losing 6 out of their last 10 games in the 2021 regular season. Watt suffered an injury and spent the majority of the season on the injured reserve list.
However, Watt had a great comeback in the 2022 season as he registered 12.5 sacks in the 16 games he played. But the 34-year-old hung his cleats at the end of the last season.

Social media reacts to J.J. Watt nearly becoming a Steeler
NFL fans on social media lost their minds at the possibility of the Texans legend J.J. Watt playing alongside his brothers T.J. Watt and Derek Watt in Pittsburgh. Some people suggested that the future Pro Football Hall of Famer J.J. still has time to come back from his retirement and play for the Steelers. Check out some of the reactions below.
The 34-year-old defensive end Justin James Watt had a remarkable NFL career that spanned 12 years. During his successful career, Watt received 5 Pro Bowl nods, 5 first-team All-Pro recognitions, and won 3 Defensive Player of the Year awards.
When it’s all said and done, J.J. Watt, along the New England Patriots legend Tom Brady, will surely be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the first year they become eligible. That will be in 2028, five years after their retirement.
Just like Brady, J.J. also didn’t have any trouble finding another gig following retirement. Just a few days ago, Watt signed a multi-year deal with CBS Sports to work as a sports analyst in the upcoming season.
