The Kansas City Chiefs were not able to enjoy their back-to-back Super Bowl wins to the fullest. A tragedy unfolded during the team’s victory parade as a shooter opened fire leaving multiple injured. While law enforcement was doing its level best to bring the situation under control, two men who were in the vicinity of the shooter decided to neutralize the situation quicker and prevent any further injuries or possibly even deaths by tackling the suspected shooter.
A tag team tackle made by two fans on the 14th of February outside Union Station was a more important play than any made by the team throughout the football season. The two men were honored by Jackson County for their act of heroism. Trey Filter and Paul Conteras, the two men involved in this said, “Once I did that, he broke my tackle and Paul there, he dove on him. He hit him and then he got loose and I was right there like Trey said, when I took him down, we rolled.“
At this point, they saw the gun held by the suspect up close. Understanding the gravity of the situation, the duo quickly sprang to action and made sure they took him down. “As much as we were keeping him down, he was fighting to get up, but we couldn’t let him get back to his feet,” they said.
Multiple suspects have been charged for the Union Station shootings
So far, two adults have been charged with murder, two juveniles have also been charged for possession of a gun from which the shooting took place. They have not been charged as adults yet. Jackson County Legislator DaRon McGee applauded the two men’s efforts to bring the shooter down.
“The tragedy that happened at the parade could have been a whole lot worse had it not been for your actions of you and Trey on that day. This County owes you a debt of gratitude for your heroic actions. You just stepped up and stepped in to protect people you’ve never met and don’t even know.”
Legislator Manny Abarca said at the Jackson County Legislature meeting wherein the duo was honored for their bravery, selflessness, and heroism. “There are guardian angels that show up sometimes when we need them and that is you two one hundred percent.” The two men involved were grateful to one another as they helped each other in the heat of the moment. In addition to Trey and Paul, Sasha and John Krough were also honored on Monday for having rescued Jenipher Cabrera, a 20-year-old who was shot a few blocks away.
