It’s mostly sunny in Florida throughout the year—not for the Jags, though. They have been famous for their hiccups in the NFL since their inception in 1995. Although the Duval always expects a miracle every year, things continue to remain rough. Most of the fans would argue that their inability to get better slots for the draft limits their chances of acquiring quality players. But few insiders would point out that the root cause is more sinister. However, even the greatest critic of the Jacksonville Jaguars would defend Andrew Wingard for being one of the better ones.
Safety Wingard, aka “Dewey,” is not very fond of the era of his former coach, Urban Meyer. It was nothing out of the ordinary; the Jaguars were in their usual place, lingering in the bottom half of the AFC South. Meyer, who was a minor celebrity in college football, stepped into the big league, hoping to prove himself. However, things did not go according to plan.
The 26-year-old recalls the tumultuous time as if it happened yesterday. “You have no idea,” Wingard said. “I could be here all day.” He shed light on a rather interesting incident that happened between him and Meyer.
After the Seattle Seahawks humiliated the Jaguars by a 31-7 scoreline in 2021, something had to change. The board called a team meeting, and the players’ thoughts reflected the mood: gloomy. Andrew Wingard chimed in with his opinion, pointing out they had a rookie quarterback (Trevor Lawrence) and a (Rokiee) head coach.
Things escalated quickly as Meyer heard everything and dialed Wingard. “Dewey, Tell me why the hell did you call me a rookie head coach.” He even threatened to cut his Safety off. Coming from the coach, that is serious. Eventually, he had to apologize.

Urban Meyer is the past for Andrew Wingard and Doug Pederson, the present, and possibly a better future
Meyer did not stick around in Jacksonville for too long afterwards a relief for Wingard and crew. When all hopes seemed to dissipate, a messiah by the name of Doug Pederson appeared on the horizon. But he did warn the fans that he can’t fix the situation in one night.
The Jaguars were struggling with a 3-7 record, which could have gotten worse. However, Pederson flicked his magic wand, and that dismal record became 9-8. They finished first in their conference and booked their place in the divisional playoff game. This was the Jaguars’ first appearance in postseason football since 2017. Unfortunately, they lost to the eventual champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.
Meanwhile, they have strengthened the squad for the 2023 NFL draft, adding depth in key areas. Highly-rated offensive tackle Anton Harrison was the Jaguars first-round pick. They also bolstered the tight end position with second-round pick Brenton Strange.
