Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was absolutely right when he said quarterback Dak Prescott has become the MVP “right before our eyes.” From failing to secure a win in three games straight to having the shortest MVP odds (tied with 49ers’ Brock Purdy), Prescott has come a long way.

Amidst the remarkable outing and leading his team to the top NFC East ranking, there has been quite a talk about the star quarterback’s next possible contract extension with the Cowboys.

With this season, Prescott has entered the final quarter of his $160 million contract tenure with Dallas, which is exhaling after the 2024 season. Based on previous instances, Prescott sure isn’t a novice when it comes to contract negotiation tactics.

However, Jerry Jones is playing close to the rules of the playbook. He isn’t just focusing on playing defense, in fact, he is confident to land Prescott’s next contract, especially as he is playing at MVP-caliber.

According to a recent play-by-play by Jon Machota in an X (formerly Twitter) post:

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on @1053thefan sounded confident about their ability to get Dak Prescott’s next contract done. Don’t pay any attention to discussion. It’s meaningless. The only thing that is factual here is what I decide and what we decide as a team and what Dak decides. … We know exactly where we are on the contract, years left on the contract and we should be, and are, about as close on that type of communication. … The timing on it remains to be seen.

With that being said, based on the performance given by Prescott, if he wins the MVP award, there might be a record-breaking contract in the NFL.

Dak Prescott ranked favorite in the MVP race

In NFL history, most of the MVP awards have been given to quarterbacks, 38 to be precise. This year again, though wide receiver Tyreek Hill has a fair chance of winning the award, quarterback Prescott is truly the leader. And the betting markets knew that very well when they ranked him MVP favorite.

Entering the 2023 season, Prescott faced a lot of criticism, especially during the Cowboys’ back-to-back losses after a 3-0 start. It was highly unlikely that the quarterback would be even considered in the MVP conversation. But in the eight games afterwards, Prescott has come off flawlessly ranking his team to top in NFC East.
