On Sunday, ahead of the Dallas Cowboys‘ week 11 game against the Carolina Panthers, owner Jerry Jones announced Dallas’ legendary head coach Jimmy Johnson will be inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor for his achievements. Jones believes that inducting Johnson into the Cowboys ROH could end their Super Bowl drought.
Well, I will believe anything that helps. … I’m a superstitious guy, so I guess I must believe in that as well. Candidly, I certainly would have wanted to win more games than we’ve had a chance to (while being) a part of the Dallas Cowboys.Jones said according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
It has been more than two decades since Jimmy Johnson led the Cowboys to back-to-back Super Bowl championships. He has already been added to the Pro Football Hall of Fame back in 2021, but he had to wait a couple more years to be recognized by Jerry Jones and the Dallas-based football team. Johnson’s tenure with the Cowboys came to an end in a rough way.
Following the successful 1993 season, Jones and Johnson decided to part ways. Just a few months later, Jones said in a league meeting that there were 500 coaches who could’ve led that team to a Super Bowl victory. Later, Johnson admitted Jones’ comments hurt him a lot despite his apology.
Johnson worked with the Cowboys from 1989 to 1993 and won 2 Super Bowl titles. He was then replaced by Barry Switzer, who led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl ring in the 1995 season. Since then, the Cowboys haven’t won anything in nearly three decades.
Jerry Jones talks about inducting Jimmy Johnson into the Cowboys ROH
Two years ago, Jerry Jones announced to the world that he would soon induct Jimmy Johnson into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor. And now, he has officially put a date on Johnson’s induction ceremony.

First of all, I really thought it was time and I wanted to do it this year. As you know, we don't have a set of time frame of when to do the Ring of Honor ceremony. Frankly, It just it just felt right. Certainly there was some little awkwardness that was happening for not doing it that I guess I anticipated but I really didn’t anticipate it. So I wouldn’t have wanted that to linger any longer.
Jerry Jones believes this is the right time to induct Johnson into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor. Johnson will be inducted into the ROH on December 30 during the Cowboys’ game against the Detroit Lions.
