Last week, the Dallas Cowboys shocked everyone by trading for the San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance while already having a stacked quarterback room. Many are already questioning Dak Prescott‘s future in Dallas following Lance’s addition. And now, the Cowboys’ general manager Jerry Jones has stirred the pot again by claiming that he wanted to draft Jalen Hurts before the Philadelphia Eagles did in the 2020 NFL Draft.

While speaking with the reporters following the Trey Lance trade, Jones tried to explain the reason behind trading for the former 3rd overall pick. “I think had we been able to draft him [Lance] with next year’s four, the kind of talent he was in this draft, like I just told you, two years ago, we were looking at Philadelphia quarterback [Jalen Hurts],” said Jones.

Back in 2020, the Cowboys drafted wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in the first round and cornerback Trevon Diggs in the second round, both have seen huge success in Dallas. Still, Jerry Jones might slightly be regretting missing out on the former Ohio State signal-caller Jalen Hurts. The Eagles surprised everyone by drafting Hurts, who was a projected 3rd or 4th round pick in the second round itself. That might’ve ruined Dallas’ plans.

Nonetheless, now, they have a great prospect in Lance, who was drafted by the 49ers as the 3rd overall pick in 2021. Lance was a highly-touted prospect out of North Dakota St but injuries ruined the Niners plan for him. Now, Lance will fight for the backup QB job in Dallas and then could eventually take over Dak Prescott’s spot as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback.

The Eagles’ former second-round pick Jalen Hurts surprised everyone last season by having an MVP-calibre season. Hurts finished 2nd in the MVP voting last year only behind the Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.

As a result, the 2022 Pro Bowl quarterback ended up securing a massive five-year contract extension worth up to $255 million with the Philadelphia-based football team.

And now, he will look to continue his good form in 2023 and will be looking to win the MVP in the upcoming season. Furthermore, he would also be looking to lead his franchise to a Super Bowl victory.

Hurts and the Eagles will start their 2023 campaign with a tough road game against the New England Patriots on September 10. Starting a season with a victory against the Pats will set the tone for the rest of their campaign.
