“Bengals winning the division”: NFL Fans react to Safety Jessie Bates being franchise tagged by the Cincinnati Bengals

Jessie Bates

Jessie Bates has officially ended his holdout and is back in Cincinnati, the team’s top Safety has reportedly returned to the Cincinnati Bengals organization building on Tuesday and expressed his willingness to be franchise tagged as per Ian Rapoport. The Bengals have confirmed that Bates will be signing the contract and be placed on the Exempt/ Commissioner’s Permission list that will enable him to be exempt from the roster for a maximum period of 2 weeks.

This comes ahead of the joint practice that the Cincinnati Bengals have scheduled against Super Bowl champs, the Los Angeles Rams. Jessie Bates had decided to hold out for the whole offseason and training camp after his agent and the team were not able to finalize a deal by the 15th of July, the cutoff for franchise-tagged players. Bates is 25 years and since he had not signed a contract, he cannot be fined for holding out either.

The Bengals have solidified their defense by drafting Safety Daxton Hill in the NFL Draft and it appears that Bates may be adamant about becoming one of the highest-paid safeties in the league because the team and his agent are miles apart from reaching a number. This is likely to be his last year in Cincinnati and he could be a free agent come March next year, Kelsey Conway reports.

Bates did not want to be franchise-tagged from the start and he did not want to skip the start of the regular season this year because that would have financial repercussions. The safety now has a lot of time to get into shape and prepare himself for the season. Jessie Bates was no doubt a key part of the Bengals’ postseason push last year and made the defense better. Here’s how fans reacted to this news.
