The NFL trade deadline officially ended back on Tuesday. The San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles emerged as two big winners after the trade deadline as they managed to acquire Chase Young and Kevin Byard, respectively. But now, reports suggest, the New York Jets could’ve been the biggest winners, but they failed in their attempt to acquire Davante Adams to reunite him with star QB Aaron Rodgers.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Jets called the Las Vegas Raiders about the availability of the 6-time Pro Bowl receiver Davante. But the Las Vegas-based football team reportedly told the Jets that there’s “no way in hell” they would even consider trading the 30-year-old pass catcher.
The Jets have been considering trading for Adams throughout the summer and they were just waiting for the perfect time to call the Raiders. They wanted to reunite Davante Adams with his former Green Bay Packers teammate Aaron Rodgers, who is currently recovering from the Achilles injury he suffered back in September.
Adams had been expressing frustrations on his usage in the Raiders for a while. So, naturally, everyone expected the Raiders to move him at the trade deadline, but instead, the Raiders ended up firing their head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. And now, Adams seems to be excited about playing under the interim head coach Antonio Pierce.
Nonetheless, instead of trading for the talented wide receiver, the New York-based football team will play against Davante Adams and the Raiders in about a week in their week 10 matchup.
Jets GM Joe Douglas talks about failed attempt to trade for Davante Adams
Following the Jets’ failed trade attempt to acquire the Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams, New York’s general manager Joe Douglas, opened up about his attempt to swing big at the trade deadline.
We made a lot of calls on a lot of different positions. But it takes two to tango. We made a lot of calls, but we didn't get a lot of deals done.Douglas said via ESPN.
The Jets reportedly did make a lot of calls. Apart from Adams, the Jets also tried to acquire the Tampa Bay Buccaneers star wide receiver Mike Evans. But just like the Raiders, the Buccaneers were also unwilling to trade their veteran wideout.
Now, the Jets will have to compete with the same offensive weapons they had before the trade deadline. They, however, added depth to their offensive line as they signed the former Pro Bowl guard Rodger Saffold on Tuesday.
