The New York Jets continue to struggle to fill the quarterback position. Their second-string QB Tim Boyle, who replaced Zach Wilson as their starting signal-caller didn’t work out well for them. As a result, they moved on from Boyle after just two starts and have now signed Brett Rypien according to reports.
Tim Boyle was given the starting QB role after a series of poor outings from Zach Wilson. But Boyle didn’t prove to be any better. Boyle started two games in the ongoing NFL season and registered 360 passing yards and 1 touchdown while throwing 4 interceptions. He led the New York-based football team to a 0-2 record.
So, now head coach Robert Saleh has decided to move on from him. According to CBS reporter Josina Anderson, the Jets waived Tim Boyle and replaced him by signing QB Brett Rypien off the Seattle Seahawks practice squad. However, if Saleh is expecting Rypien to turn their season around, he would likely be disappointed again.
Rypien played in two games for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023 before ending up in the Seahawks practice squad. In those games, the 27-year-old quarterback registered 172 passing yards and zero touchdowns while throwing one interception. He also has an abysmal completion percentage of 47.4% in the ongoing season.
However, Saleh hasn’t announced a starting QB for the Jets’ week 14 game against the Houston Texans. He refused to announce the starter when he was asked by the reporters during a press conference on Monday. Amidst this chaotic situation, there were also rumors suggesting that the former second-overall pick Zach Wilson is now reluctant to take over the starting QB role again in New York.
Did the Tim Boyle experiment made Zach Wilson unhappy?
After constant offensive struggles in the last 2 years, the Jets benched and demoted Wilson to be their third-string quarterback, and handed the starting QB role to Tim Boyle. That experiment did not go well.
Now that the Boyle experiment failed, the Jets were reportedly looking to start Wilson again, but the only issue is the former second-overall pick is now reluctant to start for the Jets again after being benched according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
However, Saleh denied the rumors about Wilson not wanting to play on Monday’s press conference. So, there’s still a chance that the Jets might go back to Wilson as their leader. They are currently sitting with an ugly record of 4 wins and 8 losses. Next, they are scheduled to face the Texans in their week 14 game.
