The good news for the Michigan Wolverines is that their head coach Jim Harbaugh is finally returning after a three-game suspension. But for him, it’s more than just simple good news as Harbaugh walked off the field with $1.5 million as a bonus after Michigan’s 26-0 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Big Ten Conference Championship.
Earlier in November, coach Harbaugh was suspended by The Big Ten for alleged involvement in the program’s sign-stealing scandal. Due to this, he had to miss his team’s 1,000 victory in the program’s history and last week’s triumph over divisional rivals, Ohio State at 30-24. Nonetheless, he returned at the right time to witness and savor a milestone moment from the sideline.
The Wolverines have surpassed Ohio State for the last three years and won the Big Ten East Division. This season they did it with a 13-0 season record that paved their way straight to the College Football Playoff semifinals. For this big win, coach Harbaugh is being rewarded with $1 million, in addition to $500,000 on the team’s playoff selection, which will officially be announced by Sunday.
According to USA Today Sports annual compensation survey, Harbaugh is entitled to at least $2 million in bonuses, considering Michigan’s last week’s win over Ohio State, an amount more than the basic annual pay of around 52 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches. If the Wolverines win the National Championship, Harbaugh will be entitled to another million dollars, which he can add to his bonus total for this season.
What is Jim Harbaugh’s improvised current contract?
In the final couple of years of Harbaugh’s first contract with Michigan, he led the team to win their first Big Ten title, after 17 seasons of drought, advancing to the CFP semifinals.
As he received his bonus, he redirected $1.5 million to the Michigan athletics department members, whose payments were cut during the pandemic for the 11 months of 2020 and 2021. When the season ended, coach Harbaugh decided to renegotiate the terms of his contract with Michigan.
In the improvised contract, his basic pay increased to $8.05 million, though his incentives package remained the same, with a minor dropping to $3.275 million. Counting this season, the head coach ought to make nearly 8.2 million dollars from the Michigan school.
