The Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh just finished serving his 3-game suspension due to the sign-stealing accusations. He will now be able to coach his team in their college football playoff games. Amidst this, Harbaugh made a statement about taking a cut from his salary, if that meant the college athletes would get paid.
For the players to be compensated, I’m using my voice, and I would take less money for the players to have a share. I hope other coaches would use their voice to express the same thing.Harbaugh told reporters on Sunday.
Harbaugh — who is set to earn between $7 million – $11 million made his comments during a press conference after the Michigan Wolverines defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes in their rivalry game last Saturday.
Who can be against the players being compensated for what they do, or at least even minimum wage? I mean, who could argue against that when there’s injury or not?
Jim Harbaugh also noted that he has already donated some money to the Michigan athletic department previously. He suggested he wouldn’t hesitate to do the same for his players. Harbaugh also disagreed with the NCAA rules that don’t allow players to get a share of media rights revenue. He believes the athletes should at least get minimum wage.
There is now a booming market when it comes to college football which resulted in The Big Ten conference recently signing a 7-year television contract worth $1 billion per year according to reports. Harbaugh advocates for everyone to get a piece of that.
Jim Harbaugh wants other coaches to speak out
The Wolverines’ head coach Jim Harbaugh has been very outspoken about his opinions on college athletes getting paid. Now, he wants other college coaches to speak out on the issue.
I ask other coaches to get on board, to use their platform, their voice for the student-athletes — not just football players, all student-athletes — to be sharing in this ever increasing revenue.
There are currently two cases pending in Federal court and two cases pending at the National Labor Relations Board regarding the rule changes in the NCAA that would allow the players to get a piece of media revenue.
Until those cases reach a final decision, athletes wouldn’t be able to benefit from the booming media revenue generated by them. Still, Harbaugh continues to raise his voice in support of his players.
