“And the plot thickens”: Jimmy Garoppolo is retained by the San Francisco 49ers for one more year in a SURPRISE move
Jimmy Garoppolo
All hope is not over for Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s time in the bay area may not yet be over. Following a disappointing end to their Super Bowl run in the playoffs and suffering a shoulder injury, Jimmy G has had to endure a lot, it was evident that his odds of being the starter next season over Trey Lance were slim and that in all likelihood he would be traded somewhere else. However, that may no longer be the case.
As per NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo, the San Francisco 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo are working on a new contract and are in the advanced stages of finalizing it. This contract will bring Jimmy back to the team for one more year and guarantee him $6.5 million with additional incentives that bump the overall value of the contract to $16 million. This is a rather surprising move considering the 49ers are all in on Trey Lance.

The San Francisco 49ers have renegotiated Jimmy Garoppolo’s deal to free up some cap space:
The latest deal inked by Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers includes a no-trade clause and a no-franchise tag clause which means the quarterback will be the master of his future in free agency next year. Jimmy had been training and rehabbing his arm, he was working with the backup team and at times even alone to get back in shape. No team traded for him or expressed significant interest in him as his performance post-injury is yet to be ascertained.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan had stated that his veteran quarterback looked exactly the same and that injury had done no harm to his throwing ability. There are two possibilities for the 49ers reworking Jimmy’s contract, the first being that the team was trying to free up some cap space at the earliest and the veteran QB’s contract was taking up a significant part of it, the second and the most interesting one being that Jimmy G is the team’s insurance policy in case their bet on Trey Lance ends up going south.
Lance has looked good in practice and performed fairly well if we are to go by his teammates’ reviews but we cannot tell for sure if he is worth all the hype until we see him perform at that level in an actual regular season game. If Lance cannot live up to the expectations, there is a chance that the 49ers could decide to revert back to their veteran QB in the latter half of the season so that they do not risk having to throw an entire year away.
For Jimmy Garoppolo, this new contract is a sigh of relief, the belief from all sources was that he would be released because he was not attracting much interest from teams in a quarterback market that has become extremely competitive this offseason. He will remain in a backup role and will get opportunities to show that his shoulder injury should not be a cause for concern for teams that are looking to trade for him.
