The Las Vegas Raiders recently signed the former 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo on a 3-year deal. The franchise held a press conference to formally introduce Jimmy G as the new Raiders QB. During the press conference, the 2-time Super Bowl Champion shared a funny story involving his former Patriots teammate Tom Brady and his new head coach Josh McDaniels.
Jimmy Garoppolo was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 2nd round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He spent 3 years with the Patriots as the backup quarterback before he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. Furthermore, Garoppolo spent six years with the 49ers and led them to a Super Bowl appearance. But due to the rise of young QBs, his service was no longer needed for the Niners.
And now, the 31-year-old QB has agreed to terms on a 3-year $67.5 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he will be reunited with his former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Amidst this situation, Garoppolo took a trip down memory lane and shared how he first met Josh McDaniels during his pre-draft visit in 2014.
“I don’t know if it was planned, but I swear he planned it — Tom Brady walked in,” Garoppolo said during the press conference on Friday. “And I thought it would throw me off a little bit because I had never met him before, and a little starstruck. But yeah, he walked out, and Josh kept going with the teaching. That was our first interaction.”
Jimmy Garoppolo strives to earn the respect of his new locker room
Jimmy Garoppolo learned a lot while he sat behind the greatest QB of all time, Tom Brady, for three years during his time in New England. He only started 2 games for them but he threw for 690 yards and 5 touchdowns while throwing 0 interceptions as the QB of the Patriots.
Garoppolo has had a successful career for a second-round draft pick so far, but he knows that he won’t be given everything just because he’s a quarterback and that he needs to earn the respect of his new locker room.
“I’m trying to bring an energy,” he said during the introductory press conference. “Trying to get everyone on the same page, get everyone rolling in the same direction. … I’m trying to earn it. Just because I’m the quarterback, I’m not the leader because of that. I want to be the leader because guys respect me and believe in me. I think that starts with hard work and so, I’ll try to do that as much as I can.”
The Las Vegas-based football team does have some great offensive weapons that can benefit their new franchise, QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Moreover, if they can draft well this year, they might even give themselves a chance to reach the playoffs next season.
