Former Arizona Cardinals defensive end JJ Watt is arguably one of the greatest defensive players of all time. The 6-5′ DE dominated the opponents’ offensive line and terrified the league during his prime. After an illustrious 12-year career, the Texans legend JJ Watt decided to hang his cleats and said goodbye to the sport he loved and dominated for more than a decade.
Justin James Watt was drafted in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He started every single game in his rookie but was able to only register 5.5 sacks. But in his second year, Watt exploded and had the best season of his career as he managed to register 20.5 sacks which eventually led him to win his first Defensive Player of the Year award.
Watt then went on to dominate the league for the next three years as he went to 4 consecutive Pro Bowls and was named to the All-Pro team for four straight years. Also in that span, he won a total of 3 DPOY awards. And then, after a few injury-riddled seasons and 2 straight-out unproductive seasons with the Texans, Watt left Houston and signed with the Cardinals during the 2021 off-season.
His first year with the Cardinals wasn’t that good as he only managed to start 7 games and register a single sack in the 2021 season. Although Watt managed to prove he’s still a great player in the league by totaling 12.5 sacks in the 2022 season before he announced his retirement.
JJ Watt claps back at a fan on social media
Following his retirement from the game, Watt is busy on social media and he wasn’t gonna let an internet troll disrespect him and his legacy. A Twitter user tried to recruit Watt to the Pittsburgh Steelers by pitching that he can play with his brothers OLB TJ Watt and FB Derek Watt, who both play for the Pittsburgh-based franchise.
Watt jokingly replied that he doesn’t love his brothers that much to come out of retirement and take a pay cut but another Twitter user poked the bear by saying that JJ can’t play anymore and that’s why he retired.
The 5-time All-Pro took offense to the tweet and replied with his final season stats to prove to the critics that he can still play at a high level if he wanted to. “Don’t mistake “choosing not to” for “can’t”,” tweeted Watt with the image of his final season stats.
As JJ Watt mentioned, his stats in the final season speak for themselves. The 33-year-old DE finished inside the Top 10 in sacks registered with 12.5 sacks and finished Top 5 in tackles for loss with 18 TFLs. One of the best seasons a defensive end can have and the Texans legend decided to bid adieu while he was at the top of his game.
