The Houston Texans legend JJ Watt retired from football after the 2022 regular season. The retired defensive end is now enjoying his post-retirement life and has recently dipped back into hockey, the sport he played when he was growing up. But it seems like his happy days are interrupted by a Fox Sports commentator who took offense at Watt wearing Wayne Gretzky‘s jersey number.

In early March, JJ Watt posted a picture on social media of his hockey gear which has received over 15k likes. But one Fox Sports commentator took issue with Watt’s helmet with the number 99 on it. In the hockey world, number 99 is considered a sacred one, as it was donned by Wayne Gretzky, the undisputed GOAT of hockey. Gretzky’s number has been retired by the National Hockey League.

Fox Sports color commentator Stephen L. Miller saw the helmet and aggressively called out Watt for wearing Wayne Gretzky’s number. “Any dude wearing 99 in beer league is just asking to get dropped,” wrote Miller. Additionally, in the same thread, he also added, “There are some things guys just don’t do.”

Miller sent those two tweets more than 2 weeks after JJ Watt’s original post, but that didn’t stop the Houston Texans‘ legendary defensive end from clapping back at him.

Number 99 might be sacred in the sport of hockey but the 5-time All-Pro defensive lineman has been wearing that number from his college days at Wisconsin to his last stop at his football career at Arizona Cardinals. So, Miller’s comment about the number 99 must’ve ticked off the 5-time Pro Bowl edge rusher. Besides, he also revealed that it wasn’t even his gear, but it was given to him by the NHL players who invited him to play with them in a beer league hockey game.

“Come drop me then. Let’s see how that goes,’ Watt said in a quote tweet. ‘I showed up to the rink and the NHL guys that invited me to play with them had a bag of gear for me with this helmet in it. I didn’t choose it. You gonna drop them too? #ToughGuy”

Watt played hockey from age four to 13. However, he eventually had to give up the sport due to financial reasons. The 3-time DPOY winner recently revealed that hockey is an expensive sport to play since it requires a lot of equipment and the kids constantly grow out of their gear. Nevertheless, the Texans legend made a good decision to stop playing hockey to pursue a career in football, where he has had a Hall of Fame career.
