“I was throwing it to Ja’marr Chase but…”: Joe Burrow reveals what went wrong for the Bengals in their final play of Super Bowl LVI
The Cincinnati Bengals were the biggest underdogs of last season, the team exceeded the expectations of every analyst and fan as nobody could even fathom the thought of them making it to the playoffs let alone the Super Bowl. However, while everyone was doubting the team, a storm was brewing in the team’s locker room and on the practice field.
Long-time teammates Joe Burrow and Ja’marr Chase put up a season that Bengals fans will remember forever. The team bonded well and built a chemistry that was better than the rest of the pairs in the league. In addition to Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd, and Mike Thomas all contributed immensely to the offense of the team.
“I was anticipating throwing it, just didn’t quite have the time”: Joe Burrow on the last throw to Ja’marr Chase
In the offseason training program press conference, Joe Burrow revealed how the last play of Super Bowl LVI went down in his head. Take a look at the play before you see the quarterback’s response to it:
The play seemed to haunt Burrow and Chase as they were so close to getting a touchdown, what hurts more is the fact that Chase was wide open, if he had caught that ball well, it would have been a nail in the coffin of the LA Rams and the Bengals would be world champs.
Joe Burrow was asked about this play and he had this to say about it, “I checked to that go route, I was anticipating throwing it, just didn’t quite have the time.” When a guy like Aaron Donald is chasing you, you definitely want to get rid of the ball at the earliest and because of his timely hit, Burrow missed that throw by inches… In addition to this, Joey B says that it is not that big a deal to him, “We’ve put this behind us, we lost, we had a great year, we’re going forward,” he remains optimistic about the Bengals chances this year as well.
However, deep down we all know that play is running on his mind, especially when he mentioned that he watched the Super Bowl again a day after the loss. “I treated it like any other loss, I went through that week, watched the film, saw where I could get better,” he said.
Watching the highlight of that play itself would be painful for him and Ja’marr as the widout had the best corner in the league slipping. Jalen Ramsey slipped and fell back while Chase had a wide-open route to take it home and win the Bengals the Super Bowl. That play broke a lot of hearts and lost a lot of people who had bet on the Bengals to win their savings.
But as fate would have it, things did not go their way… Irrespective of this, we hope to see the Bengals come back stronger than last season and this time accomplish the ultimate goal.
