During the 2021 Draft, the San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch went all in and traded multiple first-round picks to the Miami Dolphins to move up the draft boards and acquire the North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance. Fast forward to 2023, Lance didn’t end up being the Niners’ franchise savior and was traded to the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the ongoing season.
And now, the trade of the Lance could come back to bite the Niners in their important week 5 matchup against the Dallas-based football team, but the 49ers GM Lynch isn’t worried about it.
During Friday’s episode of the KNBR’s “Murph and Mac” show, Lynch was asked if Lance has any information that can benefit the Cowboys in their week 5 matchup this Sunday. Lynch acknowledged that Lance does have some information. He also said that it could end up hurting the Cowboys more than it could benefit them while taking a shot at MLB’s Houston Astros.
“There is information you can share,” Lynch said, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “My experience with that as a player is it tends to screw you up more than it does help you. I mean, this isn’t the Houston Astros over there banging a drum for fastballs. He can’t do that over there. And now, everything’s through the headset.”
Lynch brushed off concerns that Lance could share a whole lot of information about the Niners offensive game plan. “I do know that playing the quarterback position, he’s probably been more privy to a lot of the scheme thoughts and all that, but I don’t think there’s a whole lot,” said Lynch.

Cowboys OC plans to use information from Trey Lance against the Niners
John Lynch’s comments about Trey Lance not having much information about their offensive scheme was a response to the Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Recently, Brian revealed his plans to get information from Lance about the San Francisco-based football team.
Schottenheimer implied Trey knows a lot of pieces about the 49ers and that could help the Cowboys to better their opponents. However, the coordinator also claimed that it would be very tough to beat the Niners even if they knew all their moves just because of the talent in their roster.
Nonetheless, the Cowboys have played the Niners in the last two seasons. So, there’s certainly a lot of familiarity between the two teams. The last two times, the 49ers ended up winning the duel and now the Cowboys are looking to get one back on Sunday.
