Depression is something that affects your whole being, and those who have been through it know it’s extreme. One such prominent figure, who recently became vocal about the darkest period of his life, is Johnny Manziel– the football idol. Just like the two sides of the coin, Manziel’s success also had its fair share of perils. His NFL career was largely surrounded by personal struggle and controversies.

While talking about his battle with depression, the former Cleveland Brown quarterback expressed his core regrets for how he handled his friendship with the NBA star LeBron James, when the two were playing in Cleveland.

Manziel revealed that the former Cavaliers star tried to be there for him during the most clamorous period of the quarterback’s life when he was with the Browns. Unfortunately, Manziel was not in the right state of mind to accept the help, as his mental condition was so fragile that it was hard for him to even get out of bed, so he brushed off the support from his friend, James.

The quarterback confessed to Shannon Sharpe on ‘Club Shay Shay‘:

I remember, this is how bad off I was whenever I was in Cleveland, LeBron would text me every week to come over to the house and watch a game or play poker with the boys and just tried to be there. And I was so depressed for the first time in my life that even my biggest role model and inspiration in my life couldn't get me out of bed to hang out with him.

Manziel revealed how the challenges he faced off-field majorly affected his performance on-field, and despite having the guidance of the basketball legend, he couldn’t grasp it. Eventually, his depression and impulsiveness became the reason for the downfall of the football idol.

How Johnny Manziel’s talent squandered by his troubles in Cleveland

Despite having brilliant skills as a quarterback, the 2012 draft pick is remembered for how he threw away a great opportunity due to his implosion in Cleveland. Manziel was the top prospect during his draft selection as he was called Mr. Football based on his lit college football journey and winning the Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M

However, with his wayward reputation on the field, the teams were not willing to take a risk until the Browns came and selected him in the 22nd overall pick.

Not only did he disappoint the Browns for putting their faith in him, but he also fell into dark places due to his uber-confident persona which led him to various parties and sports events.
