“That was a Hit Job”: Jon Gruden’s agent believes his client was the victim of an orchestrated attack

“That was a Hit Job”: Jon Gruden’s agent believes his client was the victim of an orchestrated attack

Jon Gruden

Jon Gruden is one of the few examples in the NFL who had his entire life turned upside down within a week. The former Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach had his past return to bite him in the rear as a bunch of emails he had composed nearly a decade ago returned to haunt him. In light of this, the NFL fired the coach as the league’s reputation seems to be going down by the day in light of multiple lawsuits that it is faced and the public is also outraged over the manner in which it carries about its business.

Jon Gruden was not happy after he was fired, the coach decided to not take his firing lightly and decided to sue the NFL in return. The lawsuit is going on and in light of these events, Gruden’s agent, Bob LaMonte, claims that the leak of his client’s emails which were racist, misogynistic, and anti-semitic in nature was not a mistake and it was a “hit job.”

“What did Jon really do?”: Gruden’s agent defends his client and maintains he is innocent

The former HC’s agent claims his client was in a “state of shock” after he was compelled to resign from his post as per Ira Kaufman. “It was 10 years ago, and then why Jon and why the Raiders? He wasn’t even in the league at the time of those e-mails…that’s the tragedy of it,” the agent says claiming that there is no context behind these e-mails and that accessing Gruden’s personal correspondence was wrong.

“You can say what you want but if anyone really understands Jon, they know he’s not a racist. That’s quite obvious. No one would ever say that” LaMonte goes on to add. The New York Times had published multiple emails from Gruden that included offensive terms against Roger Goodell, NFLPA’s executive director DeMaurice Smith and the NFL’s first openly gay player, Michael Sam.

These emails were sent between 2011 and 2018, and they came out when the league was looking into the Washington Commanders over allegations of having a toxic workplace culture. The reason Gruden got caught in the mix was that some of these emails that he sent were addressed to Bruce Allen, a member of the team’s front office at the time.

The former HC used to work on ESPN from 2009 to 2018 when he landed the coaching gig. Before his broadcasting career, he was the HC of the then Oakland Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with whom he won a Super Bowl in the 2022 season. Gruden filed a lawsuit against the league and the commissioner accusing them of leaking the emails to “destroy his career and reputation.”

The league tried its best to get the case dismissed at the first hearing, however, a Nevada Judge shut down the NFL’s attempt to get the case dismissed. “This wasn’t good for anybody,” that’s why he ended up suing the NFL and Goodell because everyone knows it was wrong. You have 650,000 e-mails and his six were picked out… and he wasn’t even in the league. He prevailed in court and he will prevail again,” LaMonte adds.

The embattled former HC’s agent predicts that a trial would be bad for the NFL’s reputation and that his client will surely overcome this situation and land another coaching job. “I can tell you right now that was a hit job,” LaMonte concludes. If Jon Gruden were to get another Head Coaching job, that would again reflect badly on the NFL, do not forget, Brian Flores is suing the Dolphins and the NFL for racial discrimination in hiring practices. If a white coach who has a history of condemning players for their race, sexuality, and other reasons gets a job while there are numerous coaches of color who are likely more qualified and have a clean background who are overlooked, that will not make the NFL look good.
