After months and months of contract negotiations, the Indianapolis Colts have finally reached a middle ground on a contract extension with their star running back Jonathan Taylor. According to multiple reports, the Colts have reached a multi-year deal with Taylor that would keep the talented running back tied to the franchise for the next 3 years.
The former All-Pro RB Taylor signed a three-year extension with the Colts worth approximately $42 million that includes $26.5 million in guarantees, the team announced on Saturday.
“I want to thank Jim Irsay and his family, Chris Ballard, and coach [Shane] Steichen for the opportunity to be part of this organization’s future,” Taylor said Saturday, via the team’s website. “I greatly appreciate the support of my teammates and Colts fans, I can’t wait to get back on the field and do everything I can to help bring this city the championship it deserves. I’m proud to be an Indianapolis Colt.”
This contract extension makes Taylor the third highest-paid RB in the NFL in average annual value, only behind the San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey ($16 million) and the New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara ($15 million).
It is a good deal for Taylor since running backs are struggling to get a big deal in the current market. Teams are hesitant to sign RBs to a massive deal. Even talented backs, including Saquon Barkley, and Josh Jacobs, are playing in a one-year deal. But the Colts seem to trust Taylor and have rewarded him with a good deal. On the other hand, it’s a bit of a risk for the Indianapolis-based football team since Taylor is coming off an injury-riddled 2022 season.
Social media reacts to Jonathan Taylor’s massive deal with Colts
NFL fans on social media were excited about Jonathan Taylor signing a massive 3-year deal with the Indianapolis-based football team. Fans also believe Taylor’s deal will reset the running backs market. Taylor is now the third-highest-paid running back in the NFL in terms of average annual value. Nonetheless, it is a good move by the Colts, who could finally tie down their franchise running back to their team for the next few years. Taylor would be another great weapon for Anthony Richardson, who is having a good rookie year so far with the Colts.
After signing the big deal, Taylor returned to the Colts’ practice session as a full participant on Wednesday. If things go as planned, he is expected to fully return to the Colts in their week 5 matchup against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
