Josh Allen had another exceptional outing on Monday night in a wildcard tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers. But keen-eyed football fans would argue that he had help from the referee along the way.
Dave, a contributor to the BFR Podcast that focuses on all things Chicago, shared a short clip of Allen from the tie. The video showed an instance from the fourth quarter.
On 2nd and 5, Allen fake tossed the ball to running back James Cook and took off to secure first down. But Pittsburgh linebacker Myles Jack stopped his progress as Allen’s slid underneath him. It appeared to be a fair challenge until the Buffalo Bills quarterback threw his hand up in the air, trying to catch the referee’s attention.
He got it. Shortly after, the official verdict was that Jack was penalized for roughing the QB. Not only that, the Steelers suffered a 15-yard penalty, which gave the Bills an automatic first down. The drive ended with Allen orchestrating a 17-yard touchdown run from Khalil Shakir.
Football fans on social media accuse the officials of aiding Josh Allen
Throughout the 2023 regular season, refereeing has been a massive talking point in the NFL. From wrongly roughing the passer to Cowboys Micah Parsons allegedly not getting any holding calls and even conspiracy theories of aiding and abiding teams.
Football fans accuse the officials of being more of the same in the Bills wild card game.
The game ended with Josh Allen having 21 completions for 203 yards, 8 carries for 74 yards, and 4 touchdowns. This was arguably the 27-year-old’s best performance in the postseason. It also set up a match against old foes in the form of the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.
There’s a lot at stake in the game, and history is equally divided between the teams. It will be played at Orchard Park this Sunday, which is the first away playoff game of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ NFL career.
Thus far, all of his 15 post-season games have come under the comfort of the Arrowhead. The only previous two occasions Allen and Mahomes have played each other, the game finished in Chiefs’ favor.
