The Chicago Bears went into the Washington Commanders game hoping to end their 14-game losing streak dating back to last year. Quarterback Justin Fields’ stellar first-half performance helped them gain a 20-point lead. But they were not out of the woods yet. A week earlier, they blew a 24-point lead against the Denver Broncos. So the game was never played.
Commanders led by second-year QB Sam Howell mounted a comeback and cut the lead to 10 points. However, after 347 days of grueling criticism, the Bears finally managed to get over the finish line.
“It felt good,” Fields said after the game in which he had 2 touchdowns and 388 passing yards. “Just seeing all the hard work pay off, especially getting a dub after everything that’s happened this year, everything in the media.” Getting picked in the first round of the NFL draft comes with expectations. And in the case of Justin Fields, it was no different. Fans wanted to see the explosive rushes that made him famous in college football.
His start has been choppy, to say the least. A full season without a win turned the crowd and the media against him. It was on the verge of escalating when he blurted out in public that he was not being given the freedom to play the way he wanted. He quickly took back his words, though. Despite losing the Broncos game, Fields capped off an improved performance with four touchdowns and 335 yards. It’s safe to say that trajectory continued on Thursday night as well.“It just feels good when hard work pays off,” he said. “I’m proud of everybody in the building. We just have to keep this momentum going.”
Justin Fields and D.J. Moore combine to win against the Commanders
Similar to Fileds wide receiver D.J. Moore‘s life in Chicago, it did not start as he would have hoped. After a disappointing campaign with Carolina, they traded him to the Bears. He, too, was heavily bombarded with criticism for his poor performances. In the first four games, Moore recorded just under 220 yards. Not a stat for someone who has touched the 1000-yard barrier three times before.
The commanders’ game was a complete 180 for the 26-year-old. He kicked off the game on a Justin Fields pass to score a 20-yard touchdown. Throughout the game, the Fields-Moore duo had three endzone runs. Moore finished the day with 230 receiving yards and 28.8 yards per carry.
It was a historic night indeed. Not only did the Bears end their losing streak, but Moore also broke a long-standing receiver record. He is the first Bears’ playmaker to record 200 yards and three touchdowns in a single game in the Super Bowl era.
