Kirk Cousins led the Minnesota Vikings to an upset win against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. Cousins did it without his primary wide receiver partner, Justin Jefferson.

Despite the disappointing loss against the Cleveland Browns the previous week, the 49ers were still the odds-on favorites to record their sixth victory. They started off on the right track, picking off a lost Cousins pass on the first drive. However, he managed to shake away the jitters and bounce back. The 35-year-old capped off with 378 yards and two touchdowns, guiding the Vikings to a 22-17 result.

Jefferson was on the sidelines, witnessing every second. After the final whistle blew, he showed up next to cousins who were taking interviews and crowned him with the ‘SportsCenter Top 10’ chain.

The ‘Kirko Chainz’ was back on the field of football. Kirk Cousins, pointing to the grills on Jefferson’s teeth, said:

I gotta work on getting some of these, though. I gotta get that.

Kirk Cousins shined when the Minnesota Vikings needed him the most

Full points against Chicago did not provide any assurance as to whether a revival was on the cards for the Vikings. On top of that, Jefferson is currently on injured reserve, as per Sports Illustrated, due to a hamstring injury. Not only that, but recent history has been against the Minnesota franchise. They had lost the last two meetings against yesterday’s opponents.

That’s all paper talk, and when the game finally kicks off, only the present matters. No Jefferson, no problem for Kirk Cousins, who connected with rooster Jordan Addison more frequently. Addison had 7 receptions for 123 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Addison’s best moment arrived when he turned a certain interception into an endzone run. Cousins looked to have thrown his second pick when he missed the 21-year-old and found the corner Charvarius Ward. But Addison somehow snatched the ball from Ward’s clutches for a 60-yard dash.

It was possible due to Cousins’ immaculate 3rd down efficiency and pocket play. Despite the presence of Nick Bosa and Randy Gregory, he did not fall prey to a sack the entire game. He did look a bit shaky at times during the dying stages, but was accurate most of the time.

The Vikings appeared to be a changed team, and the most improved part of their play was the rushing. A combined 74-yard ball carry from the players was a welcome sight. But the bulk of the credit should go to Cousins for creating the spaces so that his running backs can attack them.

For the 49ers, Christian McCaffrey seemed to be on song once more, poaching an early touchdown and ending with the game-best 15 carries. Tight end George Kittle played a more advanced role for a change, carrying the ball five times for 78 yards. Deebo Samuel‘s replacement, Juan Jennings, caught the ball five times for 54 yards.

Brock Purdy had a better outing in terms of yards thrown compared to the Browns game. His 272 yards and 1 touchdown could have been enough to win any other day. But the two picks he threw did harm to the 49ers.
