Cardinals’ OT Kelvin Beachum believes Kyler Murray needs to ‘grow up a little bit’ to lead a franchise in the NFL

The Arizona Cardinals had one of the worst seasons in the league as they ended the 2022 campaign with a 4-13 record. They fired Kliff Kingsbury and hired Eagles offensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon along with new hire at the GM position in Monti Ossenfort. The Cardinals are looking to rebuild the team by pumping in new blood at the highest positions.
During his introductory press conference, GM Monti Ossenfort said “Ego will not be tolerated in this organization” and wants players to put the team first ahead of anything. This might’ve been an indirect dig at quarterback Kyler Murray who got into a verbal battle with former head coach Kingsbury back in November and told him to ‘‘calm the f*** down’.”
Kyler Murray was selected first overall in the 2019 NFL draft and quickly rose to fame as he was crowned as the Offensive Rookie of the Year despite only winning five games the entire season. His next two seasons were also average, with a winning percentage of around .500.

Multiple reports suggested that Kyler Murray used to skip practices in favor of playing video games at home and because of that, a special clause was added to his five-year, $230.5 million contract extension. The clause stated that Murray had to do a certain amount of independent study, which raised a lot of eyebrows around the league. Eventually, the clause was scrapped from the contract, but it did have the impression that the young quarterback didn’t always put in the work.
Soon-to-be free agent of the Cardinals Kelvin Beachum recently appeared on Arizona Sports on Wednesday and shared his thoughts about his Murray. “It’s not a completed process,” Beachum said. “I didn’t say he lacks leadership, I just think he needs to grow up a little bit. I think if he has the ability and willingness to grow up, he’s going to be just fine. They paid him for a reason, they paid him because of his talent. He has the ability to lead. When you’re in that position, we need you to lead more. You’re the face of the franchise . . . you have to lead in every single capacity.”
Kyler Murray suffered an ACL injury during the Week 14 game against the Patriots, which effectively ended his season. However, in the 11 games he played in 2022, he ended with a 3-8 record with 2,368 passing yards, 14 passing touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. During the last season as well, Murray rallied the Cardinals to one of the best starts but couldn’t carry forward the momentum in the second half of the season.
With Murray’s outburst at Kingsbury on the sideline, there is some truth to Beachum’s opinion. The 25-year-old needs to be a bit more mature as he is the face of an organization. He is certainly a gifted quarterback, no matter what people say about his height. Let’s see if what Beachum said has an impact on Murray and if he changes for the better in the upcoming season.
