Does Ken Dorsey not know about Deshaun Watson‘s checkered past? During his first press conference as the Cleveland Browns‘ new offensive coordinator, Dorsey revealed that he had heard the Browns quarterback is a ‘quality human being.’
Just two months ago, until November, Ken Dorsey was part of the Buffalo Bills setup. But he was relieved of his duties as their offensive coordinator following a 5-5 start to the season. The Browns announced that they would be adding Dorsey as their OC with head coach Kevin Stefanski‘s winter overhaul.
On Monday, the 42-year-old faced the press and presented his vision for the franchise. His itching to work with Deshaun Watson, whose 2023 season ended prematurely following surgery to his shoulder, is due to return before the offseason OTA’s.
Dorsey said of Watson:
I can't wait to get work with him. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the league.Ken Dorsey said
However, it’s what he said next that indicates he either hasn’t heard about all the alleged sexual allegations about the 28-year-old or doesn’t remember.
He added:
From everything I have heard about him, he is a really quality human being, so I am just excited about that opportunity.Ken Dorsey added
Deshaun Watson’s sexual harassment case
The Browns traded for Watson and a 2024 sixth-round pick from the Houston Texans in exchange for first-round picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024, as well as the Browns’ third-round pick in 2023 and fourth-round picks in 2022 and 2024. They also gave the Clemson graduate a $230 million contract, taking a lot of risk.
But even before the trade, 26 women came forward with serious allegations against Watson for alleged sexual harassment in 2021 and 2022. According to them, Watson would schedule a massage with a female therapist. Once alone, he would try to coerce them into doing sexual acts. He would take his private parts out and touch them in front of the therapists. One of them even accused him of ejaculation.
After the allegations surfaced, the NFL decided to suspend Deshaun Watson for the 2022 regular season and postseason. But the judge handling the case was much more lenient. Judge Sue Robinson, in the hearing, said, as per the Washington Post:
It is undisputed that Mr. Watson’s conduct does not fall into the category of violent conduct that would require the minimum six-game suspension. The judge said
Watson ultimately had to serve an 11-game ban, pay a $5 million fine, and participate in treatment. He has only played a handful of games since, further missing games due to injury.
